Whether you live in Palm Beach year-round, during the season, or work at a business in the Town, being ready for a hurricane is a must.

Your readiness for a storm should start long before meteorologists start tracking potential storms.  Mitigation should be a full-time effort by homeowners and businesses alike to ensure their properties are well-maintained and any repair needs are resolved promptly.

Several government agencies have developed useful preparedness checklists linked below regarding what homeowners and businesses need on hand before a storm since supplies fly off the shelves once a storm is announced.  Additionally, consider having a "go bag" ready with these essentials so you are ready to leave right away in the event Palm Beach is issued an evacuation order.

If the Town falls within the cone of uncertainty for an approaching storm, expect a Town Alert requesting a suspension of landscape trimming and placing debris in the right-of-ways until the storm is no longer a threat or has passed.  Curbside waste placed before a storm can clog storm drains and cause flooding.

Ensure you are signed up for Town Alerts and have registered with the Town's emergency re-entry program if it applies to you.

Please follow any evacuation orders issued by local officials and please note the Town is in Zone B of the County's evacuation plan.  If you fail to follow an evacuation order, be aware that emergency services are unlikely to be available to assist you if you have an emergency during the storm.

If Palm Beach is not issued an evacuation order, there are important steps to follow to ensure your safety during the storm.

• Stay in a small interior room on the lowest floor of your residence.
  Even if you have hurricane shutters or plywood window boarding, it's important to be away from windows and have as many walls between you and the outdoors as possible.
• The eye of the storm is not the end of the storm.
  If the eye passes over Palm Beach, there would be a period of calmness.  However, don't be deceived by the calmness since the strongest winds surround the eye and will ramp back up to full force once the eye moves away.

The damage from the storm will depend on its severity.  The recovery process starts as soon as conditions permit utility companies, the Town's first responders and public works department to operate outside safely.  Don't leave your shelter until Town officials have shared that it is safe to do so.  There may be downed live power lines and trees, in addition to traffic signal outages.

Town officials and the Palm Beach Police Department will manage re-entry according to Town's phased procedures.  Please review this summary of the Town's re-entry phases and know which phase you are part of.  Be ready to show required proof of I.D. upon reaching the Town re-entry checkpoints once your phase is allowed to return to the Town.

Please use the FPL resources below to report a power outage or monitor its status.  Please note FPL will send one daily email update about your outage restoration to the email on file with your affected service address.

• Check status of outages
• Report a power outage or call 1-800-4-OUTAGE (1-800-468-8243)

If you don't have power, remember to never bring a personal generator indoors, keep the generator 20 feet from the structure and give the generator 20 minutes of cool-down time before refueling!

Regarding garbage, recycling and yard debris collection, Public Works will resume operations as soon as conditions are safe and the County and Solid Waste Authority permit.
