[ARCHIVED] Fraud Alert: Palm Beach Police Charity Scam

Palm Beach, Florida homepage

There are people calling residents, schools and businesses asking for donations in support of the Palm Beach Police Department. If you receive one of these calls, do not donate money. The Palm Beach Police Department does not solicit donations.

Charity phone scams are all too common. The scammers will say they are associated with the police department, but give few details about their organization.

The scammer will ask for money and, often times, is pushy or aggressive with their request. If you receive one of these calls and you are unsure the fundraising effort or charity is legitimate, here are a few things you can do:

  • Document who is calling, the date and time.
  • Ask the caller for a call back number. Fraudulent groups will not want to provide any contact information or will provide an inaccurate number.
  • Ask solicitors to provide detailed written information, via U.S. Mail about the charity, and how your donation will be used. Legitimate charities will provide documentation for their organizations.
  • The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) maintains an online reporting system for telemarketing and other scams -
  • Contact the Palm Beach Police Department 561-838-5454.
