At the March 24, 2022, Shore Protection Board Meeting, Town consultant Michael Jenkins, PhD, PE from Applied Technology and Management provided a presentation summarizing the 2021 “Sediment Budget” report. This report summarizes the results of shoreline physical monitoring that is conducted on an annual basis to assess the overall health of the Town’s beaches.  The 2021 data suggests both short-term and long-term volumetric gains throughout the Town’s 12.2 miles of shoreline largely attributable to implementation of the Town’s Comprehensive Coastal Management Plan (CCMP) which included the placement of roughly half a million cubic yards of sand at Phipps Ocean Park this year.

Analysis of the 2021 Town-wide survey data suggests that over the past year the Town’s beaches gained over one million cubic yards of sand in total throughout the Town and, since 1990 have gained a sand volume of over five million cubic yards.  To provide some perspective regarding the magnitude of this volume, if it were stacked over the area of a football field it would reach an elevation of over 2,300 feet high.  These significant gains are largely attributable to efforts by the Town to offset historic erosion which include bypassing sand around Lake Worth (Palm Beach) Inlet and the placement of sand (nourishment) on the beaches in Mid-Town and Phipps Ocean Park.

While the annual monitoring indicates both short- and long-term beach volumetric gains, these gains are not evenly distributed throughout the Town and erosion remains a concern in certain ‘hot spot’ areas.  Mitigating erosion in these areas is a focus of the Town’s comprehensive plan in addition to the overall health of the Town’s beaches.
