Penelope D. Townsend, Council Member
Elected to the Palm Beach Town Council in 2014, Penelope "Penny" Townsend's family has lived in Palm Beach for over three decades and she has been a permanent resident for 14 years. During that time she has been an active Board Member of Opportunity, Inc. and has participated in numerous other civic and charitable efforts such as Hospice, ALS Foundation, St. Luke's Society, PerDev Institute, Prostate Cancer Foundation, the Library, Garden Club, and annual beach cleanups. 
Previously a Landmarks Commissioner, Penny is dedicated to protecting the essential qualities that make Palm Beach a special and unique place to live. As a mother with five children and three grandchildren, she continues to hone her skills settling disputes and finding workable solutions as a civic advocate. A lifelong advocate for better schools and education innovator, Penny graduated from Pembroke College at Brown University in 1969 and earned her MA in Elementary and Early Childhood Education at New York University while teaching at P.S.130 in Chinatown, NY. She was a classroom teacher until earning an MS in Educational Administration from the College of St. Rose. From that point until her retirement in 1999 as the Principal of the 1400 student Farnsworth Middle School in Guilderland, NY, she held numerous leadership positions at both the Elementary and Middle School level.
