Town Resident John David Corey Receives Distinguished Service Award

The Palm Beach Police Department is proud to announce John David Corey as the winner of the Safety Council of Palm Beach County’s Distinguished Service Award for his contributions in making the Town of Palm Beach a safer place for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Captain Taylor of the Palm Beach Police Department nominated Mr. Corey for this civilian award as a result of his passion for safety.  The nomination stated, “Part of Mr. Corey's strategy in making the Town a safer place is seeking out pedestrian crosswalks in need of restoration, in an effort to increase driver visibility.”  He has been instrumental in identifying crosswalks to the Public Works Department throughout the Town that may benefit from a switch to a "special emphasis" standard.  He maintains a working relationship with the Department of Transportation (DOT) and was successful in having a pedestrian crosswalk signal installed in an area he deemed critically needed one.  In addition, he identified various locations throughout the Town that would benefit from special signage, and ultimately worked with DOT to have the signs installed.

Mr. Corey collects statistics on accidents and uses those statistics to fuel his passion for safety. Currently, he is spearheading a project to upgrade the bicycle trail in Palm Beach that will provide a greater safety alternative to pedestrians and bicyclists who enjoy the path on a regular basis.

Finally, Mr. Corey founded "Palm Beach Walks" a group that advocates for the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists.  It is through the platform of this group Mr. Corey is able to advocate and educate for priority on safety in the Town of Palm Beach.  At this time, Palm Beach Walks is conducting a feasibility study for the project mentioned above.

We are thankful for all Mr. Corey has done and continues to do to promote safety in our beautiful Town. You can learn more about Mr. Corey's work at https://www.facebook.com/palmbeachwalks/.”
