Town Warns Residents About Increase in Email Spamming and Spear Phishing

The Town has experienced a significant increase in Spam and Spear Phishing over the past two weeks with town staff receiving numerous e-mails appearing to have originated from fellow staff members. During this past week several community members have received e-mails appearing to be from town staff as well. The sender’s name may indicate a staff member but the associated e-mail address clearly indicates otherwise. While there have been no instances of virus or malware infections on town computers, several other Palm Beach County institutions have not been so lucky. There is little that can be done to prevent Spam and Phishing campaigns, however, there are steps that can assist in protecting your computer from the embedded links or attachments within these e-mails that harbor very debilitating viruses and security risks.

Please exercise caution prior to opening any e-mails, even if you think you know the sender. To learn more about Phishing and the steps for protecting yourself from these very serious and pervasive risks, please go to the Federal Trade Commission web site.
